After School is Austin Prime Time

Over 7,490 children enrolled in 29 schools with low income populations participated in free after-school classes and activities These students had better school attendance rates, were less likely to be held back a grade and were less likely to drop out than like students who did not participate.
Such was the success of the Collaborative After-School Program, made possible by a partnership between the City of Austin, AISD Community Education and Austin Interfaith.

The Collaborative After-school Program provided after-school classes and activities at 26 elementary schools and three middle schools. Each school submitted a proposal outlining their budget and their particular program's objectives. Each proposal was reviewed by a committee of City of Austin staff, AISD staff and representatives of Austin Interfaith.

Children were provided a wide variety of classes and activities. Over 1,600 classes were conducted. Classes included Mathasaurius, Alphabet Journals, Cooking with Science, Computers and Hispanic Heritage. All classes and activities were conducted after school and were provided free of charge.

In May, a "Showcase" highlighting the children and their work was held at Allan Elementary School. The program featured performances of Ballet Folklorico, Cheerleading, and African Dance; exhibitions of karate and Tae Kwon Do; and music from orchestras and choirs.

The Collaborative After-School Program remains an unqualified success.
